Following the formal acknowledgment of creators as small enterprises in 2024, Visa's recently published "Monetized: 2025 Creator Report" offers fresh insights, elucidating the creator ecosystem and guiding the enhancement of financial infrastructure to assist creators. Since the emergence of Web 2.0 and social media platforms in the early 2000s, a "creator economy" driven by independent, user-generated content has prospered. As we progress into the 21st century, the creator economy is projected to attain an industry valuation of $500 billion USD, as reported by Visa, thereby solidifying content creators as bona fide business proprietors.

In collaboration with Morning Consult and TikTok, Visa's poll of over 1,000 artists throughout the United States, Brazil, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates delineates both the optimism prevalent among creators and their most significant obstacles.

The survey indicates that a majority of creators generate significant revenue, with 85% being full-time or part-time producers earning up to $100,000 annually. In all, 88% of participants anticipate an increase in their business revenue within the forthcoming year. Despite prevalent beliefs categorizing content creation as an unstable or transient endeavor, 76% reported feeling no compulsion to seek a conventional profession.

What are the primary revenue sources for creators? Brand collaborations dominate, with 94% of creators disseminating branded content more than once monthly, followed by affiliate marketing at 78% and service promotions at 77%. The analysis indicates that Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube yield the highest revenue for surveyed producers due to their substantial followings and monetization prospects.

The poll indicates ongoing expansion in the creative economy, although it also highlights a necessity for enhanced expertise and guidance in contract negotiations, business strategy, financial management, and tax and legal compliance. Many possess confidence in their capacity to engage audiences and create compelling content; but, they frequently lack the requisite business acumen to manage financial and administrative responsibilities.

In response, Visa collaborated with Karat to initiate a novel agentic pilot program designed to equip creators with a practical toolkit for financial management and operational efficiency. For instance, the processes of sending, receiving, and monitoring payments can be automated, including reminders and follow-ups for overdue invoices and brand payments.

As the creator economy expands and creators gain recognition as legitimate entrepreneurs, future stability depends on the establishment of specialized financial instruments and operational assistance from professionals.
