The Car Key ecosystem of Apple is about to incorporate a significant new luxury brand, as backend code indicates that certain Cadillac cars are being readied for digital key compatibility with iPhone and Apple Watch. This action situates Cadillac firmly within Apple's daily hardware routine.

The connection enables drivers to lock, unlock, and start compatible Cadillacs using an iPhone or Apple Watch via NFC and associated wireless technology, with the key stored in the Apple Wallet application. It transforms the handset into an integral component of the in-car experience rather than merely a dashboard accessory. This expansion follows Apple's WWDC 2025 announcement that 13 new automakers would "soon" join Car Key, including Cadillac, Acura, Porsche, GMC, Chevrolet, Rivian, and others. It indicates that phone-as-key technology is transitioning from a niche premium feature to a widespread expectation across several product lines.

The Cadillac launch is particularly noteworthy for GM. The business is discontinuing Apple CarPlay in numerous electric vehicles, while simultaneously embracing Apple's secure credential layer via Car Key. The strategy distinguishes between the ownership of the dashboard interface and the authority to unlock the doors.

Across the industry, digital car keys are rapidly becoming the new standard, with BMW, Genesis, Hyundai, and others already implementing them. Cadillac's integration redefines the luxury automobile as an extension of the smartphone ecosystem, reinforcing the connection between high-end mobility and premium smartphones. The specific model coverage and launch schedule are undisclosed, as GM has yet to finalize its plans. With Apple’s backend support established, Cadillac’s Car Key moment appears to be a matter of “when” rather than “if.”
