The latest update adds an immersive, AI-driven experience, allowing users to interact with Maps through detailed, context-aware questions about local spots.

Google is fundamentally transforming the digital navigation experience through a significant update to Google Maps. The technology company is officially launching “Ask Maps” and “Immersive Navigation” by incorporating its advanced Gemini models directly into the platform, thereby transforming the standard application into an AI-driven exploration tool and implementing the most significant driving enhancement in over ten years.
The new Ask Maps feature represents a significant advancement in location finding, enabling users to pose intricate, real-world enquiries that conventional search bars cannot accommodate. Users can now pose highly specific enquiries, such as, “My phone is dying — where can I charge it without enduring a lengthy wait for coffee?” The Gemini-powered system handles queries conversationally, delivering highly personalised recommendations and customised itineraries derived from data including over 300 million locations and 500 million community contributors.
The upgrade significantly improves the driving experience using Immersive Navigation, in addition to exploring. The map is now animated with a dynamic 3D perspective that precisely represents adjacent structures, overpasses, and topography. To alleviate driver stress, the system emphasises essential road features—such as lanes, crosswalks, and stop signs—while employing natural voice advice that resembles a friend providing directions from the passenger seat. The update now presents comprehensive tradeoffs for alternative routes, explicitly comparing elements such as traffic and tolls, while providing precise arrival instructions for parking and building entrances. Ask Maps is now being deployed on iOS and Android in the United States and India, while Immersive Navigation is being introduced across the United States, with broader availability anticipated in the forthcoming months.
