Channel Surfer is transforming YouTube into a late-90s cable television guide, thereby recreating the traditional channel-surfing experience online. Developed by technology expert Steven Irby, the web application addresses contemporary "indecision fatigue" by eliminating infinite scrolling and algorithmic recommendations. Rather than searching for a particular video, users may effortlessly select thematic networks—spanning AI, coding, news, and gaming—and immediately access content that is now being broadcasted. The lightweight application operates as a static Next.js page hosted on Cloudflare, utilising PartyKit to present real-time viewer counts for a collective viewing experience. Upon launch, the complimentary platform features a curated assortment of 175 YouTube channels and 25 music playlists categorised into 40 unique TV-style networks. An electronic program guide delineates up to 24 hours of programmed content to enhance the retro appearance.

To further personalisation, users may subscribe to Irby’s newsletter to access a straightforward bookmarklet utility that imports their YouTube subscribers right into the application. Channel Surfer utilises conventional YouTube embeds, so preserving familiar playback controls and platform adverts, which ensures compliance with YouTube's policy requirements. Capitalising on internet nostalgia, the initiative gained rapid popularity, accumulating over 10,000 views within its initial 24 hours online.
