I Captured This Remarkable Timelapse on My Phone—Here’s My Method

Updated: Jul 5

Timelapse videos condense time, enabling the documentation of its progression. Previously, specialized equipment or applications were required to accomplish the task; however, it may now be effortlessly executed using your phone. Here are the essentials for capturing an extraordinary timelapse film.

  1. Prepare Your Mobile Device

Preparing your phone in advance is essential for shooting a timelapse video, particularly if you intend to create an extended recording. First, verify that sufficient storage is available on your device. I recorded a four-hour timelapse with my phone at HD settings, resulting in a file size of 1.71 GB. To capture higher quality footage, such as 4K, additional storage is essential.

If your phone lacks sufficient storage, you must either erase files or back them up online. Alternatively, a high-speed USB-C memory stick can be utilized to augment storage on your Android phone; however, it is essential to verify if direct recording to the device is permissible.

Additionally, it is imperative to possess sufficient battery capacity to prevent your phone from depleting during the recording. It is advisable to commence recording with a battery level between 80% and 100%. However, if this is unfeasible, consider bringing a power bank and an extended cable to facilitate charging during the shoot. If you are utilizing an external drive, it is essential to have a high-speed USB hub that enables simultaneous charging of your phone and connection of the external drive.

  1. A Tripod and Additional Accessories are Required

With your phone prepared, a tripod is necessary to stabilize it during recording. This is crucial to maintain the stability of your phone and ensure that your video remains anchored in the same position. Otherwise, your timelapse would appear unsteady and less visually appealing than a stable video. Tripods are indispensable for smartphone photography, particularly for long-exposure shots and timelapse recordings.

I utilize a more robust tripod specifically engineered for DSLR cameras, as it provides enhanced stability against environmental factors—an essential attribute, particularly when photographing outside. Consequently, I avoid weak tripods, especially those typically provided complimentary with camera purchases, as these are among the smartphone photography accessories I eschew.

Additionally, if you are filming outside, it is advisable to possess protective devices for your equipment. When photographing beneath the summer midday sun, contemplate acquiring an umbrella and a fan to mitigate heat on your phone. Otherwise, it may overheat and cease functioning during recording, compromising the entire shot.

When photographing in adverse weather conditions, try utilizing a plastic bag to safeguard your equipment from rain and environmental elements. If the wind is blowing, it is advisable to attach a counterweight, such as a sandbag or a heavy object, to the base of the tripod to avert it from toppling.

  1. Identify an Optimal Location to Secure Your Video and Remain Cognizant of Your Environment

It is time to create your video. Consider the visual elements captured by your camera to enhance the intrigue of your timelapse. The passage of time may be the primary focus of your image, although employing framing is essential to augment your final film. Utilize these fundamental principles to enhance your landscape photography when using your phone. You may also experiment with other photography composition approaches, which are equally applicable to videography.

Consider the placement of your phone, prioritizing your safety and that of others throughout setup. For instance, if you intend to capture a timelapse movie of a substantial rain cloud advancing over a metropolis, ensure that you are situated in an area that is not susceptible to lightning strikes. Avoid placing your tripod on a heavily frequented sidewalk in a manner that could cause someone to trip over it.

  1. Video post-processing is beneficial.\

During timelapse recording, always capture slightly more footage than anticipated. To capture a magnificent sunset, do not position your phone merely five minutes prior to the sun's disappearance. Instead, complete it at least 30 minutes to an hour in advance to avoid missing that brief opportunity. Do not commence packing immediately after sunset; rather, wait until complete darkness ensues to ensure you catch all necessary items.

Once you possess the necessary elements, remember that a little of post-processing can be beneficial. I utilized my phone's integrated editing application to trim the timelapse movie to my requirements. Additionally, third-party applications such as CapCut can be utilized for color grading, incorporating subtle motion, or other enhancements deemed essential to elevate your final result.

Considering all the information, the sole remaining task is to proceed with the shooting. Numerous opportunities for timelapse videos exist beyond magnificent sunrises and sunsets. You may record films of individuals traversing or document star trails over the course of the night. Highways and airports are excellent subjects, particularly for creating extremely dynamic timelapses. Ensure your safety and adhere to legal regulations while shooting.
