A selection of jewellery from Cartier’s archive, featuring pieces created for the renowned Mexican actress María Félix, will be exhibited.

Luxury jeweler Cartier will occupy Mexico City’s Museo Jumex from 15 March to 14 May 2023 for an exhibition entitled “Cartier Design: A Living Legacy.” The exhibition features more than 160 items from the Cartier Collection and private collections, complemented by archival materials, including sketches of the shown pieces. Moreover, the show's venue reflects Cartier's significant connections to Latin America.

The exhibition not only displays its valuable pieces but also offers visitors an immersive exploration of Cartier’s artistic growth, unique language, design, and craftsmanship. The exhibition was systematically organized into five subject divisions, expertly coordinated by Ana Elena Mallet, with architect Frida Escobedo designing the scenography that evokes an archeological crypt. This design presents a modern perspective while acknowledging its intricate historical background.

The "Cartier Design: A Living Legacy" exhibition showcases Cartier's exceptional collection of jewellery, clocks, and decorative objects, highlighting the Maison's heritage, the historical significance of these art works, and their relevance in today's context. This legacy continues to motivate generations of designers as they devise new masterpieces for the house.

The five primary sections are: The Early Days and the Birth of a Style, Universal Curiosity, Jeanne Toussaint’s Taste, Wearing Beauty and Measuring Time, and Maria Félix and Icons of Elegance. The show commences with an examination of Cartier's symbolic artifacts from the 1850s, then transitioning to the period of Jeanne Toussaint, who became the inaugural female creative director in 1933 and adapted Louis Cartier’s vision to the evolving milieu. Design codes like the panther and garland styles, together with the resurgence of Tutti Frutti, were emblematic of Cartier during Toussaint’s tenure. In other areas, works influenced by Louis Cartier’s journeys to Asia, Europe, and the Middle East occupy the space. The integration of several sources of inspiration reflects the brand's ongoing aspiration to remain connected to the world through its creations.

Transitioning to the other collections, these objects were formerly possessed and utilized by distinguished individuals, like María Félix, an esteemed Mexican actress and Cartier aficionado, and Alberto Santos-Dumont, a celebrated Brazilian aviator who inspired the original Santos watches.

“Cartier Design: A Living Legacy” exemplifies Cartier’s cultural relevance, featuring meticulously produced design products that integrate historic processes with contemporary techniques and technology innovations. The exhibited artifacts affirm Cartier's expertise and superiority in crafting exquisite jewelry, timepieces, accessories, and decorative items. The exhibition showcases objects from the house's enormous archives, previously owned and worn by distinguished individuals, like María Félix, a celebrated Mexican actress and Cartier aficionado, and Alberto Santos-Dumont, a prominent Brazilian aviator who inspired the original Santos wristwatch. These artifacts embody a profound cultural heritage and exemplify Cartier’s enduring dedication to innovation and progress.

The Cartier Collection was established about 50 years ago with the objective of reclaiming historic pieces that feature the brand's identity. The Cartier Collection was founded in 1983, showcasing the Maison’s expertise, cultural legacy, and illustrious past. The collection encompasses artifacts from the 1850s to the present, specifically crafted for royals, socialites, and notable figures such as María Félix and Barbara Hutton. The Cartier Collection, which plays a significant role in history by serving as a witness and participant, has now grown to encompass nearly 3,000 objects. Moreover, the house's reputation of creating iconic and timeless objects, valued throughout generations, will persist as a brilliant beacon for years ahead.
