Paramount Pictures has unveiled the inaugural trailer for its next animated picture Smurfs, featuring Rihanna as the voice of Smurfette. The pop icon not only animates the cherished blue creature but also performs a rendition of Belinda Carlisle’s 1987 classic “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.”
The teaser commences with Rihanna presenting the film, then immersing viewers in Smurf Village, where her character, Smurfette, declares herself “the coolest Smurf in the entire village.” A vibrant party atmosphere is established, accompanied by Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop the Music,” but the festivities are abruptly interrupted by the enigmatic abduction of Papa Smurf. The Smurfs must undertake a bold expedition into the human realm to save their leader.
Rihanna not only voices Smurfette but also works as a producer for the film and has composed fresh songs for the soundtrack. “I attempted to secure the role of Papa Smurf, but it was unsuccessful,” she quipped at CinemaCon 2023 while revealing her participation in the production.
Directed by Chris Miller and Matt Landon, Smurfs features an ensemble cast that includes Rihanna, John Goodman, Natasha Lyonne, Nick Offerman, Octavia Spencer, Sandra Oh, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, and Kurt Russell.
The Smurfs is scheduled for theatrical release on July 18.
