The proposed device reportedly centers on proactive assistance, combining computer vision and commerce features to take on established smart home platforms.

OpenAI's inaugural venture into consumer hardware is developing into a camera-integrated smart speaker that transforms your living environment into a laboratory. Reports indicate that the device will employ an integrated camera and face recognition technology to identify people, comprehend its surroundings, and provide transaction authentication, thereby advancing the smart speaker category into a more personal domain. Leaders have characterised the project as a context-aware, "active participant" in daily life, rather than a passive voice assistant, exhibiting behaviour that encourages you toward your objectives based on its observations and auditory inputs.
The hardware is being developed in collaboration with former Apple design chief Jony Ive and his LoveFrom studio, effectively pitching the product as an AI-era HomePod 2.0 utilising OpenAI’s models internally. Priced between $200 and $300 USD and anticipated to launch in early 2027, the speaker is projected to be the inaugural product in a broader range of devices that may encompass smart glasses and a smart lamp, as OpenAI allegedly allocates over 200 staff to its gadget initiative. This method indicates a transition from solely software to vertically integrated AI ecosystems; nevertheless, it also raises significant concerns regarding privacy, data collecting, and the desirability of an omnipresent, surveillance-capable assistant in residential settings.
