Designed to encourage longer user commitments, the feature enables developers to offer reduced pricing in exchange for yearlong plans.

The company announced on Monday the introduction of a new subscription option that allows users to pay monthly for auto-renewing subscriptions while committing to a 12-month plan. This strategy enables developers to provide cheaper prices to customers in return for more stable long-term revenue.
This also addresses the number of developers that have been promoting their annual memberships within their applications. App developers frequently showcase the reduced monthly price to emphasise the savings customers would obtain by opting for the annual membership over the monthly alternative. If the user is ambivalent about a long-term commitment, the perception of receiving a superior value may encourage them to opt for the annual option.
Apple is now formalising the practices already employed by these developers, enabling the establishment of standards governing the presentation of subscription offers to prevent misleading clients over the actual costs of the agreements. Nonetheless, the option will not be accessible to developers in the United States or Singapore at the time of launch. Although Apple did not provide an explanation, it remains embroiled in App Store litigation in the U.S. about the particulars of the court's verdict in its lawsuit against Epic Games regarding Apple's subscription pricing practices. Apple probably prefers not to exacerbate the situation until it is resolved.
Singapore possesses a sophisticated payments sector characterised by robust consumer regulations, which may explain its exclusion from the original release. Customers will have access to supplementary information regarding the subscription prior to commitment, encompassing the payment structure and cancellation procedures. Customers who commit to a 12-month membership may cancel at any time; however, monthly payments will continue to be taken from their Apple account until the subscription period concludes.
Additionally, Apple states in its release that users would be able to effortlessly monitor the number of completed and outstanding payments for a certain subscription by accessing this information within their Apple Account. Apple will dispatch reminder emails and, if subscribed, push notifications to alert customers prior to their renewal dates regarding their forthcoming purchases.
The option may facilitate clients in securing more advantageous subscription deals, although it could also bind them to extended commitments if they remain attentive to their cancellations. Due to the automatic renewal of these services, a client may inadvertently consent to an additional 12-month commitment if they neglect to unsubscribe prior to the renewal date.
Developers can configure this new subscription type in App Store Connect and test it in Xcode. New monthly subscriptions requiring a 12-month commitment will be accessible globally to users on iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe 26.4, tvOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4, or subsequent versions, alongside the launch of iOS 26.5, iPadOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and visionOS 26.5 in May.
