Drone manufacturer DJI has officially announced its anticipated foray into immersive imaging by introducing its inaugural 360º camera, the Osmo 360.

The brand characterizes the Osmo 360 as “revolutionary,” highlighting its substantial 1-inch 360º sensor, which enables the capture of ultra-high-resolution 8K footage at 50fps, an assertion it deems a “industry-first.” Although the Osmo 360 features a sensor larger than the 1/1.28-inch sensor of its closest competitor, the Insta360 X5—previously regarded as the premier 360 camera—DJI asserts that the configuration of its new sensor, rather than its dimensions, is of greater significance. DJI characterizes their new sensor as an industry-first, with a distinctive square shape that maintains the same image field as conventional rectangular sensors while achieving a "25% increase in sensor utilization" by removing the "unused area" inherent in the rectangle configuration. The brand asserts that their HDR square sensor consumes less energy and enhances battery longevity.

DJI's inaugural 360 camera was destined to possess remarkable specifications. In addition to capturing 8K at 50fps, DJI asserts that the Osmo 360 can record 8K continuously for 100 minutes at a reduced frame rate of 30fps, claiming to be “the only 360 camera” available that can do this feat. The new camera shines not only in video but also in still photography; the firm asserts that the Osmo 360 captures the "sharpest" 360º still images of any 360 camera, attributed to its huge 2.4μm pixels—twice the industry standard size of 1.2μm—which provide enhanced clarity with reduced noise. The combination of a substantial f/1.9 aperture and bigger pixels enhances the Osmo 360's performance in low-light conditions and results in an elevated dynamic range of 13.5 stops.

Supplementary features comprise an elevated 100fps frame rate (with resolution limited to 4K), gesture and voice control, intelligent tracking, and seamless quick switching between the front and rear lenses without interrupting the recording. In "single-lens mode," the Osmo 360 functions as a first-person action camera, offering an ultra-wide 155° angle in 5K resolution at 60fps, or a 170° field of view in 4K/120fps with "Boost Video" mode. The camera has a weight of 183g and has 105GB of internal storage. According to DJI, the battery may endure for up to 180 minutes when utilizing the “Battery Extension Rod.”

The DJI Osmo 360 is currently available on the brand's website in multiple configurations, beginning with the "Osmo 360 Standard Combo" priced at £409.99 GBP / €479.99 EUR / $549.99 USD.
