Google Chat is introducing a novel method for communicating with coworkers. Referred to as huddles, they function similarly to Slack huddles, enabling rapid initiation and termination of calls directly within the application. Due to their operational nature, huddles render you more available than ever, presenting both advantages and disadvantages.
Instant Meetings Can Now Be Initiated on Google Chat
According to a post on Google Workspace Updates, Google Chat is introducing a new feature called huddles. These are intended to provide "a rapid and adaptable method for connecting [...] facilitating real-time collaboration more effortlessly than ever."
To initiate a huddle, click the Video icon in the upper right corner of a chat message with the desired individual, then pick Start a huddle from the dropdown menu. This will initiate an audio-only call with your colleague, contingent upon their acceptance of the invitation.

Upon the commencement of the huddle, you may resize the window or reposition it, toggle between audio and video, or share your screen. Huddles are now being deployed, with Google assuring that the feature would be accessible to all Workspace users by January 6, 2025.
I genuinely dislike being perpetually accessible
Although some individuals may value this new function, I myself do not welcome constant accessibility. Particularly at employment. Having held positions that necessitated daily meetings, I regard them as a necessary evil; yet, I want to minimize my attendance as much as possible.
The inquiry pertains to the efficacy of these huddles in functioning as promoted, enabling colleagues to engage and disengage swiftly without becoming encumbered by protracted calls. While they have the potential to be beneficial, they may also devolve into protracted discussions that ultimately diminish productivity for you and your colleagues.
Tip: To enhance the productivity of your online meetings, utilize the tools that are readily accessible.
Ultimately, only time will reveal whether of the two scenarios is accurate; however, I will refrain from accepting Google Chat huddles unless absolutely necessary.
