Google Unveils $100 Fitbit Air to Compete in Minimalist Wearable

The tech giant introduced its screenless Fitbit Air on Thursday, targeting the growing demand for distraction-free fitness tracking with a competitive price aimed at rivaling Whoop. The Fitbit Air is available for preorder now and will be released on May 26.

The device encompasses health and fitness tracking functionalities, including continuous heart rate monitoring, atrial fibrillation alarms, blood oxygen saturation, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep stages and length, among others. The technology behemoth stated in a blog post that the device targets individuals who perceive wearable devices as excessively big, complex, or costly, emphasizing that the Fitbit Air is “simple, affordable, and comfortable enough for continuous wear.”



Google asserts that the screenless design is intended to enable users to "live in the moment." The Google Health app, the rebranded iteration of the Fitbit App, allows for the monitoring of health and fitness, as announced by Google on Thursday.The new wearable is significantly smaller than its predecessors, according to the “Air” moniker, since it is 25% smaller than the Fitbit Luxe and 50% smaller than the Inspire 3.The device will autonomously monitor prevalent activities and workouts; Google asserts that the experience is tailored to the user and enhances progressively as it assimilates their behaviors.



The device has a mass of 12 grams when including the band and 5.2 grams when without the band. It is compatible with the Pixel Watch, allowing users to utilize the larger device during the day and transition to the Fitbit Air at night or during exercise for enhanced comfort, according to Google.The Fitbit Air offers a battery life of up to one week, with rapid charging capable of providing a full day's power in about five minutes. It is additionally water-resistant to a depth of 50 meters.



The technology conglomerate has also declared that Google Health Coach, its Gemini-powered comprehensive fitness trainer, sleep coach, and health and wellness consultant, is now accessible to Google Health Premium members. The Google Health Coach assists in formulating personalized fitness regimens tailored to your objectives and accessible equipment, evaluating your sleep patterns, among other functions.



The new wearable will be released with three types of bands: a “Performance Loop Band” constructed from recyclable materials featuring a breathable design, a waterproof “Active Band,” and a subtle “Elevated Modern Band.”
