Infrared Camera Tech Could Be Coming to Apple’s AirPods Pro 4

Reports point to tiny sensors designed to enhance environmental awareness.

Apple is allegedly preparing a significant hardware redesign for the AirPods Pro 4 by incorporating specialised infrared cameras into the earbuds. A rumour from MacRumors indicates that these sensors will enable the gadget to perceive the wearer's surroundings, promoting a new era of hands-free interaction and enhanced integration with the Apple Vision Pro ecosystem.

The incorporation of infrared technology signifies a major architectural transformation in the AirPods series since its introduction. Through the employment of microscopic camera modules, the earbuds may be capable of recognising intricate hand motions in mid-air, enabling users to control music or modify volume without physical contact with the device. This hardware update is purported to deliver an improved spatial audio experience by more precisely mapping the user's position in relation to their environment and other Apple devices.

Although Apple generally adheres to a three-year update cycle for its audio products, this "Pro" edition is scheduled for release in 2026. Speculation is mixed over whether the release will be designated as the AirPods Pro 4 or if it would serve as a secondary, premium tier above the basic AirPods Pro 3. This action reflects Apple’s recent approach with the AirPods 4, when the company provided various pricing tiers and feature configurations within the same product generation to engage a broader part of the premium audio market.

The AirPods Pro 4 is rumoured to retain a price of $249 USD, with an anticipated release in the latter half of 2026.
