The Phone (3a) base Edition is a limited-run device directly influenced by its global fan base. This unique version of the Phone (3a), developed over six months as part of the “Community Edition Project,” emerged from four distinct phases: design, wallpaper creation, packaging, and marketing, all orchestrated by community members in conjunction with Nothing’s internal teams. This venture exemplifies Nothing's dedication to transparency and community-oriented innovation, converting a conventional smartphone into a collaborative artistic project.

The design features a transparent teal shell influenced by late-1990s and early-2000s portable gaming devices, crafted by hardware designer Emre Kayganacı. This retro-futuristic aesthetic enhances Nothing's distinctive translucent design, incorporating a more whimsical, Y2K-inspired element that unveils layered interior structures without practically exposing the components.

This version retains the fundamental specifications of the basic Phone (3a), available in a 12GB + 256GB option. The frosted teal case features unique UI elements created through the Community Edition Project, including a classic digital clock-style lock screen widget and further customised software enhancements submitted by community winners. The packaging and accessories adhere to the retro theme, with a notable accessory being a set of translucent dice that reflect the vibrant technology of the era.

One of its most notable design elements is the phosphorescent "Glow in the Dark" finish on the device's rear. The rear of the phone emits a gentle luminescence in dim environments, utilising green phosphorescent material, a feature that is completely analogue and does not draw power from the battery. The "Firefly" concept was created by community members Astrid Vanhuyse and Kenta Akasaki, who sought to improve the phone's distinctive Glyph Interface with a design that is both organic and useful. The design is enhanced with a collection of exclusive "Connected Optimism" wallpapers that incorporate a blend of organic and geometric forms to reflect the hardware's style.

The community's impact transcends the device, affecting both packaging and marketing. The packaging showcases a macro-lens depiction of the phone’s camera module, crafted from reflecting materials that resonate with the phosphorescent motif. Issued as a strictly limited edition with only 1,000 pieces available worldwide. For additional information, go visit Nothing's official website.
