This AI Product From Google Enables Interaction With Your Podcast "Hosts"

It is simple to perceive the hosts of your preferred podcast as acquaintances. They are informal, humorous, and genuine; you tidy the residence and commute to work alongside them. It seems feasible to engage in a reciprocal dialogue with them. Now, it is possible—specifically, with AI-driven podcasts from Google's research-oriented NotebookLM interface.

Google's Recent Update Enables Interaction with Podcast "Hosts" on NotebookLM

Google is implementing a new update to NotebookLM, their extensive AI-driven research helper tailored for academics. NotebookLM should not be conflated with Google's new Deep Research tool for Gemini; it is an autonomous system that utilizes AI to synthesize solely the resources provided to it. In exchange, the assistant provides several methods for you to assimilate those contents, including briefing documents, study guides, and audio overviews, which are effectively podcast episodes on your subject of study.

An Audio Overview is not merely an auditory recap of the content. The summary presents two hosts engaging in a dialogue replete with colloquialisms, such as "like" and "it's crazy," delivered in a tone like to familiar podcasts. It is strikingly reminiscent, indeed.

You may now engage in the dialogues between the two podcast hosts by contributing a thought or offering a question.

Google is gradually implementing this Interactive mode in beta.

Methods for Engaging in Dialogue

Google has announced that the new Interactive mode will be gradually deployed to all users. The mode cannot be applied to an existing Audio Overview; therefore, you must build a new one to determine if the functionality is available.

According to Google's blog post regarding the change, if the beta feature is available on your device, an Interactive mode (BETA) button will appear after you build an Audio Overview. Press Play, and subsequently, you may select Join to engage. The host will summon you when prepared to address your question.

Naturally, like other AI items at this juncture, the feature will not be impeccable. Google provides a comprehensive disclaimer:

"This is a trial feature and is applicable solely to new Audio Overviews. Hosts may experience pauses before responding and may occasionally present inaccuracies."

Indeed, we also experience awkward moments in face-to-face talks.

Expend Additional Resources for Enhanced Benefits

The application remains free for all Google users, but a new option for a premium monthly subscription for NotebookLM is now available. In conjunction with the announcement of Interactive mode, Google has introduced NotebookLM Plus, which provides additional benefits beyond those available in the free edition. Noteworthy features of NotebookLM Plus comprise:

  • Increased limit on the quantity of notebooks, sources, and audio generations

  • Additional methods to tailor the style and tone of your notebook entries

  • Collaborative team notebooks

Google Support indicates that the complimentary edition accommodates a maximum of 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, and three audio generations daily. NotebookLM Plus will increase each of those numbers by a factor of five.

The current free edition of NotebookLM appears sufficient for individual users, while the Plus version may be suitable for organizations or companies. I have not yet encountered Interactive mode on my gadget, but I anticipate engaging with my AI "companions" when it becomes available. I will certainly remain grounded in reality. Fortunately, self-contained models like as NotebookLM reduce the likelihood of AI assistants providing hallucinated or irrelevant responses, hence maintaining the relevance of these interactions.
